A veces tenés la vida

A veces tenés la vida
y a veces tenés

reflector, escenario
oscuro y ¿dónde estoy? ¿quién
sos? Preguntas necias
para un lector de texto con
abscesos de revelación: huecos
para ojos y oídos más oscuros
que lo indiscreto.

Sacar las conclusiones incorrectas:
apariencia, brillo, nervios

No sé. ¿Ves? Esa es la frase ideal. Su nombre, precedido por un artículo. Un artículo determinado. ¿Quién soy? ¿Soy la computadora? Es posible. Todo es posible. Nada es imposible. Sos o no sos.

me enseñó griego, me enseñó a
mirar urnas. Me boxeó. No le
daba miedo pegarme en el brazo. Yo
lo amaba. A mi madre esto
le daba miedo.

Nos llevó al Museo Metropolintano.
Miramos las urnas. Hablamos sobre
los griegos. Leí sobre los
griegos. Me drogué. Dejé de
hablarle. Fumé porro en una plaza
con una pipa en forma de calavera
y dejé
de estudiar latín,

Dejé de estudiar griego.

A veces tenés la vida, a veces tenés
esa otra cosa, ese encantador y horrible
fardo de heno insaciable. A veces tenés

y tu libro y tu lámpara y tu
silla demasiado rígida.
A veces la tenés, a la vida.

A veces, vida, tenés todo lo que
tengo, a veces no sabés cuando
parar, a veces te repetís.
furtivamente. A veces
tenés la vida.

Psicoanálisis

El psicoanálisis es para los que mendigan
clasificaciones, para los que fuman cigarrillos
y moran en ciudades. Bailar

diciendo? Es todo lo que yo
necesito, y quiero ser
responsable por lo que
quiero, lo que necesito.
La semana que viene incluso
podría estar muerto. ¿Y qué?
El viento también pasa.

Una mente buena puede ayudarme a cantar.
Cuando estoy en un coro veo el
grupo, como bosques delante de
árboles, y a mí mismo sólo me veo
oscilando con ellos, mi túnica que susurra
no es un problema. Cuando se trata del
atuendo, soy parte de él.

Esta mente buena, con todas
sus coincidencias felices y sus frías
verdades, ¿no debería tomarse
su tiempo cuando camina a la tienda?
No, ella sabe lo que quiere,
¿por qué debería entretenerse? No

No bromeo. No sé reír
y quizás vos puedas enseñarme. Es posible,
¿no, mente buena? Alguien te enseñó a
haerlo y podés darte vuelta y enseñarme a
mí ¿podrías?

William Blake no nació ayer

Sometimes you have life

Sometimes you have life
and sometimes you have

spotlight, soundstage
dark and where am I? Who
are you? Fatuous questions
for a reader of text with tell-
tale abscesses: holes
for eyes and ears darker
than indiscretion.

Draw the wrong conclusions:
seeming, shimmering, shaken
nerves. Nails across the
throaty chalkboard and premature

leeches like charms on blank skin.
I scattered myself among these
ideas, a drawer full of flames:
these pages, charring.

Which word will appear on the inward screen? Where is salt-of-the-earth Adam, with his callused heels, and his spread wife? And his rotting melons, and his insistent flies, and his ugly father, shouting at him from the safety of a cloud?

Before I step through this portal
before I step through this pane of glass
the giver must receive
the taker must tell whom
he hid
must exacerbate the problem
must pretend
before I step through
think through

and on the other side
what will I learn
on the other side what
will I see what verdant
valley what thing of joy
what lamb gallivanting
in Easter fields
eyes of fire
black wool

to the tune of an indignant world
to the tune of an ungrateful world
to the tune of a cheated satellite

spinning. Something you plug your hears not to ear. Something you wear a blindfold not to see. Something you try to disprove. And the question is, there is no question. Everything is an answer. Everything has a sound. But you can’t hear it. Why not? I don’t know. The computer knows. The computer is the subject. The computer has fingers with which it types these words. It only types words about itself. It only knows itself. The computer. See? That’s its ideal sentence. Its name, preceded by an article. A specific article. Who am I? Am I the computer? It’s possible. Anything’s possible. Nothing’s impossible. Either you are or you aren’t. And you go from there.

But if music is what does me in,
and it is, because I want to
two-step with a broom across
the wooden floor, to sing in the
parlor lights, unchanging,
of news and the news concurs,
the news opens spirit chambers
across Boston, believes it,
lenses fog up and veracity
remains in its ships:

Forget it was the news.
I wore through my shoes.

The world is all it is.
I walked barefoot with Liz.

She disregarded the world too.
But we both had a clue.

She gave me an inner kiss.
We passed a snake that hissed.

The snake’s eyes were blue.
Liz sneezed: achoo!

I spoke kindly about my teacher.
The other teachers couldn’t stand
this teacher, but this teacher
taught me everything I knew.
He gave me a marble notebook.

This teacher taught me Latin,
taught me Greek, showed me how
to look at urns. He boxed me. He
wasn’t afraid to punch me in the
arm. I loved him. My mother
was afraid of this.

He took a few of us to the Met.
We looked at the urns. We talked
about the Greeks. I read about
the Greeks. I got stoned. I stopped
talking to him. I stopped
learning Latin,

I stopped learning Greek.

Sometimes you have life, sometimes you
have that other thing, that charming, disgusting
bale of insatiable hay. Sometimes you have
something else and sometimes you have life.
Sometimes you have life.

Sometimes you have life, sometimes you
have that other baby, the one with the raggedy
hair, the one with skis for feet, with marbles
for eyes. Sometimes you have something
older than life.
And sometimes you have life.

Sometimes you have life, sometimes you have
two lives, sometimes you relive life until it
begs to be let go and you believe that this
will be the last time, sometimes you have death,
sometimes you die all afternoon with your tea
and your book and your lamp and your
overstuffed chair.
Sometimes you have it, life.

Sometimes, life, you have everything that
I have, sometimes you don’t know when
to stop, sometimes you repeat yourself.
Once I sat on a bluff and traced
Nietzsche’s X with an under-aged finger. I
fought him in the text. A porcupine sidled
up to me. Sometimes you
have life.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is for beggars
of sorts, for cigarette smokers
and city dwellers. Dancing
with analysands is a delicious urban
pleasure. Take her glasses off
and brush away her overgrown
bang.

Psychoanalysis is for idolaters,
for people who insist on identity
above all else, on the urgent,
rakish pleasures of their genders:
give them a chance to spring
their lovers free.

Faithful lice climb from head to
head and those who try to shrink
them also scratch the attendant
outward itch. It’s not for everyone.
Energetic exchanges between
patient and analyst
catapult

middle dreamers from unwashed beds.
Make them regular confidants
and those who are in therapy
will threaten you with purest
affection, face you at the edge
of the dock over lukewarm
Stella Artois and stare past
your face into the

life, the communal life, the overhung
itinerant life in which each
living creature repeats its
afflictions like tides. Take
her for a late night coffee.
Tell her simply that you
understand.

William Blake Wasn’t Born Yesterday

I work in an art gallery and in the gallery we sell
paintings and sculptures and videos you name it
to people and institutions with money for culture
I imagine they celebrate when they get their paintings
home on the wall they pour themselves glasses
of champagne and admire their purchases dots
of purple applied just so the way the edges
are handled the way they change under the changing light
when they drain their glasses they retire to their bedrooms
where they keep plasma TVs where they sleep and dream
and wake and love and toss in their sheets
while downstairs their paintings hang sleeping too
their purple splotches like dried blood at night
and at dawn like Genesis like ‘Morning Has Broken’ like
rainbow rainbow rainbow in the boat Elizabeth Bishop
fishes from and then she lets the fish go
motoring on I guess what more can she do
sit there and wait for a bigger fish? no
she goes back to Key West she fills a tumbler with gin
with three ice cubes she sits at her private table
she puts a few words down on paper the beginning
of a letter fragments from a dream

A Kind Mind

A kind mind is all you
need to succeed. What
am I saying? It’s all I
need, and I want to take
responsibility for what
I want, what I need.
Next week I might not even be
alive. So what?
The wind passes too.

A kind mind can help me sing.
When I’m in a chorus I see the
group, like forests before a
tree, and not myself, but swaying
with them, my robe swishing,
is not a problem. When it comes
to apparel I’m part of it.

This kind mind, with all its
happy coincidences and cold
hard truths, shouldn’t it take
its time when it walks to the store?
No, it knows what it wants,
why should it dilly-dally? There’s
no joy in the journey, it’s all
in the achievement, the bird
in the hand, the bush ripped from
the soil, the silver forest
that lights the way to gold.

Dear kind mind, how I
hold you in high esteem! How I
want to wear you with the
emblematic fury of a crown.
I’m not kidding. I don’t know
how to laugh and maybe you
can teach me. It’s possible, isn’t
it, kind mind? Someone taught
you how to do it and you can
turn around and teach me, can’t you?

The Landline

How do you hold a happy day,
when as it goes it goes away?
The wind carries it, you can see
the wind in the grass, the grass
blows over as evening comes
and yes your day is gone, unheld,
your hands empty like eggs
whose yolks and white have been
dumped out – you get to eat
but the containers are now useless,
their lives spent. What in you
would hold the day if not the hands,
the eyes, the mind?
Is that what a memory is, when you
hold it successfully? Happy days
go quicker than the sad, eager to return
to their sources like droplets to the sun,
evaporation, the lake from which the droplets come.
The wide world, happy and sad, held and dropped,
experienced and dreamed; drugs taken, sober
days spent happy too, in a house beside
a bar, beaming, waiting for friends, for
the telephone to ring, and when it does
the wind picks up and blows the grass
and there it goes, the wind, the happy day,
silence on the other end, receiver in the cradle.
